Same-Day Care
Adult Fever Evaluation in Berkeley Heights, NJ
Fever that won't break? Get to the cause with same-day testing and treatment — flu, COVID, strep, UTI, and other common causes evaluated in one walk-in visit.
Find the cause, treat the actual problem
Fever is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The right treatment depends on what's causing it — flu, COVID, bacterial infection, UTI, sinusitis, and many other things can all present with fever. Treating the fever itself with Tylenol or ibuprofen helps you feel better, but it doesn't address the underlying cause.
Our providers evaluate adult fevers with a focused exam plus same-day testing as appropriate: flu, COVID, strep, urinary tract infections, and others. Most fever visits end with a clear answer and a treatment plan in under an hour. For pediatric fever care, see our pediatric urgent care page.
When to come in
- Fever of 100.4°F or higher that's lasted more than 24–48 hours
- Fever with sore throat, cough, runny nose, or body aches
- Fever with painful urination or back pain (possible UTI/kidney infection)
- Fever with facial pain or sinus pressure
- Fever with abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting
- Fever with a rash
- Recurring fevers without a clear cause
- Fever after recent travel or known exposure (flu, COVID, strep)
How we treat it
- Focused history and exam. Symptom timeline, exposures, travel, medical history. Exam targeting the most likely source — ears, throat, lungs, abdomen, urine, skin, lymph nodes.
- Rapid in-office testing. Flu, COVID, strep, and urine analysis — all done on site with results in minutes.
- On-site X-ray when needed. Chest X-ray for suspected pneumonia, available same-visit.
- Antibiotic treatment when indicated. For bacterial infections (UTI, strep, bacterial sinusitis, pneumonia) — prescribed only when there's evidence of bacterial infection, not just because there's a fever.
- Antiviral treatment for flu. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) shortens flu when started within 48 hours of symptom onset. We prescribe when indicated.
- Supportive care guidance. Hydration, fever reducers (acetaminophen or ibuprofen), rest, and clear instructions on what to watch for at home.
- Referral or escalation when needed. If the workup suggests something requiring hospital evaluation, we'll arrange direct referral.
What happens at your visit
- Symptom history. When the fever started, what other symptoms, exposures, what you've already tried.
- Focused exam. Targeted to find the source — usually a quick ENT, lung, abdomen, and lymph node check.
- Testing as appropriate. Flu, COVID, strep swabs; urine test; X-ray if needed. Most results in 5–15 minutes.
- Diagnosis and treatment. Clear explanation of what's causing the fever and what to do about it.
- Return-to-work documentation. Signed note when needed.

Fever Treatment FAQs
There's no single threshold. A 101°F fever with severe sore throat or painful urination warrants evaluation. A 102°F fever with mild cold symptoms in an otherwise healthy adult may be reasonable to wait out for 24–48 hours. Symptoms matter more than the number.
For an otherwise healthy adult: 24–48 hours of supportive care at home is reasonable if the fever is moderate and there are no concerning symptoms. Come in sooner if you have severe pain (throat, back, abdomen, head), painful urination, breathing difficulty, or you just feel significantly worse than a typical viral illness.
Yes. Both rapid tests are available on site with results in minutes. We also test for strep, perform urine analysis, and have on-site X-ray for chest evaluation.
Yes. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is most effective when started within 48 hours of flu symptom onset and we can prescribe it the same visit when flu is confirmed or suspected based on symptoms and exposure.
Recurring or persistent fevers warrant evaluation — they can indicate something that wasn't fully treated, an unusual infection, or occasionally a non-infectious cause. We'll do a focused workup to find out.
The thresholds and concerning symptoms differ by age, especially for babies and toddlers. This page is for adult fever evaluation; for kids, see our pediatric urgent care page.
No. Walk in any day from 8 AM to 8 PM.
Yes. Most plans cover urgent care visits with a copay. We accept Aetna, BCBS, Cigna, UHC, Horizon, Medicare, NJ FamilyCare, Humana, and Oxford.
For most fevers, no. Go to the ER for fever with stiff neck, severe headache, breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, a rash that doesn't fade when pressed, severe abdominal pain, or any fever if you have a weakened immune system.
