Same-Day Cardiac Testing
EKG Testing in Berkeley Heights, NJ
Walk-in EKG (electrocardiogram) testing at Sage Urgent Care. Heart rhythm evaluation in minutes — useful for chest discomfort, palpitations, pre-physical clearance, and DOT exams.
Heart rhythm evaluation, same visit
An electrocardiogram — EKG or ECG — is a quick, painless test that records the electrical activity of your heart. It’s the standard first test when someone has chest discomfort, palpitations, lightheadedness, or other symptoms that might be cardiac. It’s also routinely required as part of certain physicals, pre-employment screenings, and DOT certification.
Sage Urgent Care has on-site EKG capability. A 12-lead EKG takes about 5 minutes to perform; results are available immediately and reviewed by our provider during your visit. If the EKG suggests something that needs a cardiologist or hospital evaluation, we’ll arrange the referral directly. Most EKGs come back normal — and being able to confirm that the same visit saves a return trip and a separate appointment with a specialist.
When to come in
- Chest discomfort that isn’t severe but you want it checked
- Heart palpitations or a racing heart you’ve noticed lately
- Lightheadedness or near-fainting episodes
- Pre-physical or pre-employment screening that requires an EKG
- DOT physical certification (CDL drivers may require EKG depending on history)
- Pre-operative clearance documentation for an outpatient procedure
- Establishing a baseline EKG for medical record purposes
How we handle it
- 12-lead EKG. Standard hospital-grade 12-lead recording, performed by a trained medical assistant. Takes about 5 minutes.
- Same-visit interpretation. Provider reviews the tracing during your visit. Most EKGs are normal; abnormalities are explained clearly.
- Comparison with priors. If you have prior EKGs available, bringing a copy helps the provider compare and detect subtle changes.
- Follow-up coordination. If the EKG shows an abnormality requiring further evaluation, we coordinate referral to a cardiologist or, when appropriate, direct transfer to a hospital.
- Documentation for physicals and forms. EKG results are included in physical exam documentation, DOT certification forms, and pre-employment paperwork as needed.
What happens at your visit
- Quick check-in. About 5 minutes at the front desk.
- EKG performed. Small electrode stickers are placed on your chest, arms, and legs. The recording takes about 5 minutes; the test itself is painless.
- Provider reviews results. Reading is done the same visit — typically within 10 minutes of the test.
- Plan and documentation. If results are normal, you leave with documentation. If there’s a finding, we discuss next steps and arrange any needed referral.
Why Sage
Walk-in, no appointment
Most cardiology offices schedule weeks out. We do EKGs the same visit.
Same-visit interpretation
A provider reads the EKG while you’re there — not days later by a remote reader.
Combined with full evaluation
An EKG alone tells part of the story. We also do a full exam, vital signs, and symptom assessment to put the result in context.
Form-ready documentation
EKG results integrate seamlessly with DOT physicals, pre-employment clearances, and pre-op forms.
EKG Testing FAQs
No. The test is completely painless — just small adhesive electrode stickers temporarily placed on the chest, arms, and legs. The whole procedure takes about 5 minutes.
Immediately. The provider reviews your EKG during your visit. You’ll know the result before you leave.
Go to the ER for severe or new chest pain, chest pressure with sweating or shortness of breath, pain radiating to the arm or jaw, or fainting. Use walk-in EKG for non-emergency evaluation — occasional palpitations, mild chest discomfort already evaluated by your doctor, or screening requirements.
No. You can eat and drink normally before the test. Avoid caffeine in the hour before if possible — it can increase your heart rate slightly and affect the recording.
Most insurance plans cover EKGs when there’s a clinical reason for the test. For pre-employment or DOT certification, coverage varies — we’ll explain costs upfront.
Yes. You can request a printed copy or have it sent electronically to your primary care provider or cardiologist.
No. We perform 12-lead resting EKGs only. Stress testing and echocardiography require a cardiologist’s office or hospital. If your evaluation suggests one of these tests is needed, we’ll coordinate the referral.
With insurance, typically the cost of your urgent care visit co-pay (the EKG is usually bundled). Self-pay cost for an EKG with interpretation is approximately $75–$125.
